Byrne outlines urgent need for channel at Cahermore to be extended

Flooding was on the agenda again at Monday’s meeting of Galway County Council, with Kinvara Councillor Joe Byrne calling for the immediate progressing of the channel in Cahermore. A channel was constructed in the townland between Ardrahan and Kinvara in January during the height of the flooding, but it has been agreed by all that to alleviate South Galway’s flooding issues in the long-term, it needs to be deepened and lengthened.

Funding approved to keep Mayo North Promotions Office going

The elected members of the Ballina Municipal District approved the payment of €10,000 to fund the continuation of the Mayo North Promotions Office for a period of three months. The office was set up two years ago, for a two year trial basis which ended at the end of December. The council management are now reviewing the performance of the office over the past two years and director of services, Joe Loftus, said he expects the review to be completed by the end of March this year.

€1.4 million spent on flooding so far, but bill will top €4 million

Mayo County Council has spent €1.4 million so far in dealing with the fallout from the flooding that has affected the county since early December, but the final total cost of dealing with the after effects and trying to ensure it does not happen again will be in excess of €4 million.

South Mayo still suffering from flood waters

The village of Cong in particular is still suffering because of the flooding that first occurred last December. At the January meeting of the Claremorris Municipal District of Mayo County Council, director of services Paddy Mahon outlined in a presentation the areas that have been affected and the efforts the council has made to keep things under control.
